Mary "Petie" Euince (Peters) Smith

October 8, 1918 ~ July 21, 2008 (age 89)

Mary "Petie" Smith, 89, of Lancaster, Ohio, died Monday, July 21, 2008, at Fairfield Medical Center.  She was born on Oct. 8, 1918 to the late Will Robinson and Pauline Eunice Tannehiill Peters, in Everett, Washington.  She was a member of First United Methodist Church and its Laura Rice Seaman Circle. She graduated from Lancaster High school in 1936 and the School Colors were Purple and Gold, she then graduated from Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland.  She was very active in multiple civic activities and instrumental in the effort to establish a campus of Ohio University in Lancaster, Ohio.  She was a past president of Lancaster City Schools and, during her terms built seven school buildings.  She was a founder of Fairfield Heritage Association. She founded the hospital memorial TWIG system to honor her mother-in-law, Mrs. Frank E. (Myrtle) Smith, with the start of TWIG No. 1.  She also was a vice president of the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home, Inc.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Irvine G. Smith; sons, Frank R. (Dixie C.) Smith and David S. (Debra G.) Smith both of Lancaster, Ohio; grandchildren, Matthew (Kay) Smith of Baltimore, Maryland, Lori (Matthew) Swain of Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Katherine (Michael) Schenk of Lancaster, Ohio and F. Eric (Jennifer) Smith of Baltimore, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Abigail, Isabel and Eden Swain of Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Tanner Schenk of Lancaster, Ohio and Jacqueline Smith of Baltimore, Maryland; two step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Nada S. Kerr; a nephew, R. Kenneth (Teri) Kerr III; and niece, Calista K. (Ronald) Strickmaker, all of Athens, Ohio.

Services will take place at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Frank E. Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Larry C. Brown officiating.

Interment is to follow in Forest Rose Cemetery, Lancaster, Ohio. Friends may call from 2PM to 6 PM. today and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the funeral home.
