Betty J. Layne, age 92, a spirited force of nature, left this world on June 19, 2025, as she transitioned to be with her Lord, casting her radiant spirit into the embrace of eternity. Born on March 30, 1933, in Paris, Tennessee, Betty blossomed into a woman whose journey was marked by steadfast love, unyielding resilience, a love for God, and a vibrancy that touched those around her.
Betty’s amazing personality was multifaceted. She was known for her sometimes hard-headed yet unwavering approach to life, embodying a “never say die” attitude that inspired all who encountered her. Central to her being was her faith; as a devoted member of the Pickerington Church of Christ, she dedicated herself to instilling her love for the Lord in her children, ensuring their Bible lessons were never neglected prior to doing homework. Her love for the Lord, her family, and her church was boundless.
Her frugality extended beyond simple frugality; she championed resourcefulness, often opting to walk miles just to save on parking, embodying a spirit of independence and resilience. This paved the way for one entertaining tale of her life. Betty once saved box top coupons to acquire a dress that she proudly wore during a memorable trip to Lake Michigan. Unfortunately while frolicking in the lake, the dress succumbed to the water's embrace and began to shrink and dissolve, leaving her family in stitches over the antics of that sunlit day.
Betty had a penchant for the joyful chaos of family gatherings. Memories of these occasions are laced with laughter. Who could forget the raucous games of "Pit"? She and her family would engage in intense competition, their voices rising in the heat of battle, much to the chagrin of her husband, Robert, who once humorously insisted they take the clamor outside, only to realize he must bring them back indoors to spare the neighbors the spectacle of their spirited rivalry.
For many years, she was devoted to her career as an administrative assistant, a role in which her tenacity and work ethic shone brightly. A tireless worker, Betty powered through each day with a boundless energy that was both infectious and inspiring. After retirement she volunteered at Fairfield Medical Center where her resiliant work ethic contiued on. Her dedicated work was matched only by her devotion to her Lord and her family, where life was filled with laughter and cherished moments.
Among her proudest achievements were the deep-rooted connections she nurtured with her family. She found immense joy in crocheting and knitting, each stitch a testament to her desire to create and contribute. Betty spent countless hours engaged in activities that brought her closer to her loved ones—each moment a treasure that she valued dearly.
She leaves behind her loving daughter, Lori (Gregory) Hall, and grandchildren R. Joseph (Sarah) Lohr, Benjamin (Jessica) Lohr, and Abigail (Cameron) Haynes. Her great-grandchildren, Bayley, Ellie, Jack, Maverick, and Leonidas Lohr, along with Avery and Emily Haynes, will carry forth her legacy of love and laughter. Also holding her memory are her brother, Kenneth (Doris) Knox, and several cherished nieces and nephews, who will remember her warmth and amazing spirit.
Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Keith Layne; her parents, Eulon and Nora Lindsey Knox; her children, Robert Knox Layne and Judy Marie Layne; and her brother, Billey Knox.
As we reflect on her life, let us remember Betty J. Layne not just for the roles she filled, but for the love she shared, the laughter she ignited, her love for Christ, and the unyielding spirit that left a mark upon the hearts of those she held dear. A visitation will be held at the Pickerington Church of Chris 9645 Stoudertown Rd. on Thursday, June 26th, 2025 from 10AM-Noon, followed by a funeral service officiated by Joshua Ball. Burial will follow the funeral service at Floral hills Memory Garden. Her family and friends will honor her remarkable life and the legacy of joy and love she leaves behind.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Betty’s name to Fort Hill Christian Youth Camp 13500 Fort Hill Rd. Hillsboro, OH 45133. Arrangements have been handled through the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home and condolences can be made at www.funeralhome.com
