Charles “Chuck” Hayes, 79, of Lancaster, passed away at the Fairhope Hospice Pickering House on Friday, April 29, 2026. He was born on August 28, 1946 to the late Hollis Lee and Anna Elizabeth (McGrew) Hayes.
Chuck lived a life of service—service to his country, his community, and to his family. He was a veteran of Vietnam having served in the Navy. He made a career with the Lancaster Police Department, retiring as a Lieutenant after being a patrol officer and a detective. Chuck was an active member of the Ohio FOP Lodge #50. He enjoyed home improvement projects, took pride in maintaining his lawn, loved spending time with his granddaughters, and enjoyed learning about military history.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hayes; children, Kristine (Stevan Walkowski) Hayes, and Charles (Tracy) Hayes; grandchildren, Zosia Walkowski and Ada Hayes. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hollis and Anna Hayes, and a sister, Carol Keller.
Per Chuck’s wishes, Caring Cremation® has taken place through Frank E. Smith Funeral Home. No formal services will be held. Those interested in honoring Chuck are encouraged to make a donation to FairHope Hospice and Palliative Care, 282 Sells Road, Lancaster, OH 43130.
