Don "Pappy" Nutter, age 84, of Lancaster, OH, passed away on August 7, 2025, at OSU. Born on March 22, 1941, in Clarksburg, WV, he was the cherished son of the late Presley and Lectie Nutter.
Don proudly served in the U.S. Navy as a First Class Petty Officer, dedicating ten years of his life as a member of the SeaBees, where he honed his formidable building skills. Following his military service, he retired as the managing director for Service Master, overseeing operations for several hospitals before lending his hands to customers at Lowe’s until two years ago.
Throughout his life, Don was known for his kind and gentle spirit. His friends and family will remember him as fun, sweet, and handsome—qualities that made him a beloved figure in their lives. He had a special love for babies, and his laughter and warmth would fill any room.
Don had a passion for woodworking and reading, pursuits that brought him great joy. Most importantly, he treasured the time spent with his family and friends. His greatest pride came from his loving wife, Ruth “Bammy” Nutter, and their children: Jeannie (Richard) Libby and Allen (Beth) Nutter. He relished the moments as a grandfather to Jordan Johnson, Colin Libby, Jacob Nutter, and Joshua Nutter, and as a great-grandfather to Julia Johnson, Jamie Johnson, William Libby, and Callihan Libby. He was also a proud brother to Marvin (Deborah) Nutter and leaves behind several nieces and nephews who held him dear.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Orene Sandy, Lois Nutter, Rosalie Davis, and Retta Sharp—each of whom will greet him warmly in eternal rest.
The Lancaster community will gather to commemorate Don’s remarkable life. A visitation will be held at The Frank E. Smith Funeral Home in Lancaster, located at 405 N Columbus St, on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, from 4 PM to 6 PM, followed by veteran honors by the Lancaster Veteran Burial Detail at 6 PM.
