Don "Pappy" Nutter, age 84, of Lancaster, OH, passed away on August 7, 2025, at OSU Hospital. Born in Clarksburg, WV, he was a cherished son of the late Presley and Lectie Nutter.
After graduating from Victory High School in Clarksburg, Don proudly served in the U.S. Navy as a First Class Petty Officer. He dedicated ten years of his life as a member of the SeaBees, or Mobile Construction Battalion, where he was stationed in many countries including Argentina, Newfoundland, Iceland, Lebanon and Egypt, all while he honed his life long building and woodworking skills. He was also a proud Vietnam Veteran. Following his military service, he worked until retirement as the managing director for ServiceMaster, overseeing operations for several hospitals and school districts. To stay busy after retirement he worked at Lowe's in Lima, Wapakoneta and Lancaster until two years ago.
Don had a passion for woodworking and reading, pursuits that brought him great joy. Most importantly, he treasured the time spent with his family and friends. His greatest pride came from his loving wife, Ruth “Bammy” Nutter, and their children: Jeannie (Richard) Libby of SC, and Allen (Beth) Nutter of RI. He relished the moments as grandfather to Jordan Johnson, Colin Libby, Jacob and Joshua Nutter, and as a great-grandfather to Julia and Jamie Johnson, William and Callihan Libby. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who held him dear.
Don is survived by one brother, Marvin (Deborah) and was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Orene (Lenard) Sandy, Lois Nutter, Rosalie (Morris) Davis, and Retta (Omer) Sharp—each of whom will greet him warmly in eternal rest.
The Lancaster community will gather to commemorate Don’s remarkable life. A visitation will be held at The Frank E. Smith Funeral Home in Lancaster, located at 405 N Columbus St, on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, from 4 PM to 6 PM, followed by veteran honors by the Lancaster Veteran Burial Detail at 6 PM.
