GySgt. Kevin L. Johnson USMC Retired

GySgt. Kevin L. Johnson USMC Retired, passed away August 30, 2023. At Mt. Carmel East.  He was born in Columbus, OH on Jan. 4th, 1969. He was a 1987 graduate from Whetstone High School where he excelled at track and field and basketball. He served his country by joining the Marines serving in the Iraq War. He met his wife Tonya Johnson, also a Marine, and he then retired after 20 years of faithful service, including the participation in the Battle of Nasiriyah, Iraq from March 23 to April 2nd, 2003. He was well decorated, with the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (6th Awd); Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3Rd Awd) Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2nd Awd) Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (7th Awd), National Defense Service Medal (2nd Awd), KOSOVO Campaign Medal, NATO Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal (2nd AWD), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (2nd  Awd), Navy Unit Commendation, Presidential Unit Citation-Navy, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Letter of Appreciation (2nd Awd) Certificate of Appreciation, and Expert Rifle Qualification.

He enjoyed working on guns and was an armory expert.  He was a Free Mason, who loved to spend time with his family. He truly believed family over everything.  He looked forward to each of his children’s School/sporting events and was happiest cheering them all on. He was a great man/warrior whose memories will be cherished and remembered by all.

Kevin is survived by his wife of 16 years, Tonya Johnson; children, Courtney (DeMariae Nunez) Martin, Patrice (Quinton Patterson) Johnson, Kevin L. (Sable) Johnson Jr., Summer Johnson, Sarah Johnson, Morgan Johnson, Michael Johnson, Alyssa Johnson, Elijah Johnson, and Savannah Johnson; siblings, Patricia Ann Johnson, Annette (Tony) Sherman, Toyia Bangura, Diane (Art Sr.) Thomas,  and Clyde W. (Lisa) Johnson Jr.; grandchildren, Antony, Quentin, Joshua Nunez, Leila Patterson, Syrus, Gunnar, and Amari Johnson, Ronnie Williams, Roman Johnson, and Reign Hayes; and father, Clyde W. (Juanita) Johnson Sr.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Audrie Ann Johnson.

Family and friends may visit at the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home, 405 N. Columbus St. Lancaster, Oh 43130 on Thursday September 7th, 2023 from 6PM until 8PM and on Friday, September 8th from 11AM until 3PM.  Military honors will take place with the Lancaster Veteran Burial Detail starting at 3PM Friday Sept 8th, at the Funeral Home followed by a service officiated by Kevin’s father Elder Clyde W. Johnson Sr.  Caring Cremation™ will take place following the service.  Donations may be made to the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home to help with expenses.
