James "Jim" Rolland Nutter, at the age of 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Jim was born in Logan, Ohio. His family of James and Inez Nutter, along with siblings Ruth, Ben, Bea, Robert, Kenny and Helen moved to Lancaster in the late 1930’s. After graduation from Lancaster High School in 1948, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy. He served until being honorably discharged in 1952.
The family’s move to Lancaster proved to be a defining moment in Jim’s life as he met and fell in love with the girl across the street. Norma Faye Ball gave Jim quite the chase as she played hard to get all through school. It was not until Jim was home on leave in 1952 that Norma finally consented to go on a date. It must have been some date because at the end of Jim’s leave not only had Norma gone out with him, but they decided to get married. Once Jim was discharged from the Navy in September 1952, wedding plans were underway and the two were married on November 15th, 1952.
After getting married Jim and Norma settled in Lancaster where they spent most of their lives. Jim worked as an Industrial Engineer for and retired from Lancaster Colony Corporation. Jim was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years.
Jim and Norma were avid travelers. They visited many locales in the United States. Oftentimes, their trips were accompanied by family. Jim and Norma loved sharing traveling experiences with nieces and nephews, as well as siblings and in-laws. Besides traveling, Jim had many hobbies over the years, most shared with Norma. They included raising pigeons, horseback riding, rebuilding cars, fishing, golfing, bowling and playing the piano.
Jim is survived by many nieces and nephews. Those he was especially close to included Rodney (Chris) Ball, Julie (Bryan) Davis, and Todd (Mary) Burnside.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife of almost 74 years Norma Faye, his parents James and Inez Nutter, and siblings.
Many thanks to Riverside Methodist Hospital, The Avalon of Lewis Center, and Vitas Hospice Care for the dignity and care they showed Jim these past few months.
