Joseph "Joe" Allen McClurg

Joseph “Joe” Allen McClurg, of Lancaster, passed away on September 30, 2026, at the age of 74. Born in Lancaster on October 27, 1951, Joe’s life was rooted in the community that first welcomed him and remained home throughout his years.

A talented athlete, Joe was nominated to attend West Point but had already committed to Eastern Kentucky University, where he attended on a football scholarship. He later served in the United States Army. Following his military service, he continued     his education at Miami University, where he graduated.

Joe devoted 35 years to education as a junior high math teacher and football coach, sharing his knowledge, patience, and encouragement with generations of students and players. Of all his accomplishments, he considered his family his greatest.

Joe was a caring, kind, and sweet man whose gentle nature touched those around him. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and gave his time volunteering at the food pantry, extending his kindness to others in his community. He enjoyed working in the yard—unless it was a good day for golf. Joe proudly cheered for the Lancaster Golden Gales, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and any team playing against Michigan.

He will be remembered with deep love by his wife of 38 years, Jill Marie McClurg, his children, Caitlin Marie (CJ) Koller, Jacob Allen McClurg, and Christopher Allen (Natasha) McClurg; grandchildren, Austyn and Will Koller, Scotty and Maddy McClurg; sister, Judy Ann Woods; nieces and nephews; and several close friends whose companionship and affection were part of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. and Dorothy E. McCabe McClurg; sister, Linda Lou Reliford; and brother, Larry Lee McClurg.

Family and friends may visit on Friday, October 2, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at The Frank E. Smith Funeral Home, 405 N. Columbus St., Lancaster, Ohio 43130. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 231 E. Mulberry St., Lancaster, Ohio 43130. Military honors will follow a procession at Betzer Cemetery.
