Loretta Benner, a beloved member of the Portsmouth and Lancaster communities, passed away at the Pickering House on January 3, 2024. Born on June 15, 1941, in Otway, Ohio, Loretta led a remarkable life that touched the hearts of many.

Loretta began her career at Martings, where she initially worked in alterations. However, her dedication and hard work soon led her to ascend to the finance department. Her commitment to excellence and attention to detail were evident in everything she did.

Outside of her professional life, Loretta had a passion for cooking. She was known for making a mouthwatering round steak and was regarded as an amazing cook by all who were fortunate enough to taste her creations. Her culinary talents brought joy and satisfaction to countless gatherings and celebrations.

Loretta's warm and friendly nature earned her the reputation of being a social butterfly. She never met a stranger and was always ready with a welcoming smile and kind words. As part of the welcoming committee at Lancaster Baptist Church, she made everyone feel valued and loved.

Loretta's proudest accomplishments in life were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She found immense fulfillment in being a devoted mother to her daughter Debbie Sonner (David) and son Lee Benner (Beverly). Loretta's love extended to her grandchildren Kristin Emmert (Shane), Jessica Sonner, Melanie Sonner, Sarah Strenger (Trenton), Levi Benner (Josie), Luke Benner (Jessica), and Rebekah Benner. Her joy multiplied with the arrival of great-grandchildren Blakeleigh Emmert, Cass Emmert, Beverleigh Emmert, Enzleigh Emmert, and Miracal McGraw-Stenger.

Loretta is preceded in death by her loving husband, Forrest Benner, as well as her parents Donald Budd and Anna Margaret Snook. Their memory will forever be cherished in her heart.

She is survived by her dear sister Bonnie Yost and her husband Gary.

The legacy of Loretta Benner will be celebrated during the services held in her honor. The visitation will take place on January 5, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home 405 N Columbus St. Lancaster, Ohio. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, January 6th at 11AM at the  Lancaster Baptist Church, 2695 Boving Rd. SW Lancaster, OH 43130 officiated by Pastor Tim Knipp.  Family and friends of the area are welcome to also meet for the graveside service at 2PM at Scioto Burial Park, 4757 McDermott Rd, Mc Dermott, OH 45652. 

Donations can be made in Loretta's name to the  Lancaster Baptist Church, 2695 Boving Rd. SW Lancaster, OH 43130 or to the Pickering House, 282 Sells Rd. Lancaster, OH 43105. 


Loretta's absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved her. Her warm smile, gentle spirit, and loving heart touched the lives of many. As we gather to remember her remarkable journey through life, let us find solace in the memories we shared with Loretta and honor her legacy by embracing love and compassion in our own lives.

May Loretta's soul rest in eternal peace.
