Lowell "Jay" L. Goddard, a beacon of kindness and love, departed this world on December 9, 2025, in Millersburg, Ohio, just six days after his 88th birthday. Born on December 3, 1937, in the quaint town of Vienna, Illinois, Jay embodied a spirit that enchanted all who had the fortune to meet him. He graced our lives with his gentle presence, leaving wonderful memories with everyone he encountered.
For 23 years, Jay devoted himself to the craft of fabrication while working at Midwest Fabrication in Amanda, Ohio, where he earned the respect and affection of his colleagues. But it was not merely a career that defined him; rather, it was his profound love for his family that illuminated his path. He relished the role of patriarch, pouring his whole heart into nurturing his beloved daughter, Teresa Goddard, and reveling in the joys of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were his entire world.
A generous soul, Jay's kindness was felt by many. He had a knack for making people feel special, and no heartbreak or burden seemed too heavy for him to help carry. He found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life—from fishing on tranquil ponds to hunting deer on his brother-in-law Donald Danner’s property, where he felt one with nature, reminiscing under the whisper of trees and the rustle of leaves.
Jay's journey through life was marked by service and dedication, having spent four years in the Navy, which shaped his values and sense of duty. He laid the foundation of his life upon principles of hard work and compassion, never faltering in his commitment to those he loved. His pride swelled not from accomplishments or accolades, but from the unconditional bonds he forged with family.
Jay is survived by his beloved daughter, Teresa Goddard; his ex wife and close friend, Maggie Goddard, his cherished grandchildren, William (Destiny Fisher) Ashton, Noah (Jamie) Goddard, Daisie Lewis, and Richard Smith III; and his great-grandchildren, Rosalin Peyton, Gemma Godwin, Josephina Godwin, and Bentley Ashton. Each of them holds a piece of his heart, including his dear sister, Elsie Goddard, and his brother, Jimmy Goddard, who shall carry forward his legacy of love. His brother-in-law, Donald Danner, too, stood alongside him through the seasons of life, united in their cherished memories.
Jay now joins his beloved family members who have passed before him, including his father, Marion Goddard; his mother, Edith Cagle Afton; his brothers, Marion Goddard Jr. and Phil Goddard; and his son, Lee Mientkiewicz, and daughter, Mary A. Goddard Mientkiewicz. As the stars twinkle in the night sky, one can almost feel Jay smiling down upon us, enveloping us in the warmth of his spirit that will forever linger in our hearts.
He was loved greatly and will be deeply missed—a cherished memory etched in the hearts of his family, leaving a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering devotion. As we remember Lowell "Jay" L. Goddard, let us strive to embody the grace and warmth he brought to this world. Caring cremation has taken place through the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home.
