As a dedicated educator in the Berne Union School district, Robert imparted knowledge and wisdom to countless students before retiring in 1988. His influence extended beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impact on the lives he touched. Robert was not just a teacher; he was a friend and mentor, guiding with patience and kindness.
In his personal life, Robert was known for his deep love of family and friends. He adored his extended friends and neighbors as if they were his own family . Gatherings were filled with joy, laughter, and memories that will be cherished forever. He was a proud grandfather to Sara (Ryan) Heavner and Ben (Jaclyn) , as well as a doting great-grandfather to Colin, Able, Lola, Arlo, Oliver, Asher, and Wagner. His heart was further filled with love for great-great-grandchild Finnley, who brought a special sparkle to his life.
Robert's passions extended into his hobbies, as he found solace and fulfillment in gardening and farming in the traditional ways, often working alongside a team of horses. He loved cultivating the land, honoring the methods of the Amish, and immersing himself in the beauty of nature. He often reminisced about these simple joys with fondness, expressing how plowing a garden brought him the most contentment in life.
Throughout his life, Robert also created meaningful friendships, including with his best friends Rick (Melissa) May. He had a special bond with several Amish friends, enjoying their company and cherishing the values they shared.
He is survived by his sister Margaret "Peg" Hergatt, sister-in-law Penny Dean, several nieces and nephews, and a community that will remember him as a gentle soul with a generous heart.
