Sheryl Colleen (Neel) Johnson

April 12, 1957 — March 7, 2022

Lancaster

Sheryl Colleen (Neel) Johnson, age 64, and longtime resident of Lancaster, Ohio, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2022. She was born in Zanesville, Ohio then moved to Lancaster with her family in 1957 where she eventually became an active performer in the Lancaster High School Instrumental and Vocal Music Programs and where she ultimately met her husband, Gary.

Over the years, she served the Lancaster community in a variety of ways through her professional associations with Equitable Federal Savings Bank, Marinacci Medical Lab, Dr. James Gunther, and Dr. Shelly Thompson. Always mindful of good physical health, Sheryl coached numerous Weight Watchers classes and eventually became a trainer within the organization.

Sheryl was the ultimate Buckeye fan. She served as a Red Coat Usher at Skull Sessions as well as at the visiting team entrance in Ohio Stadium where she would also be able to cheer on her son, Dustin, who marched in The Best Damn Band in the Land. As a committed Lancaster High School Band of Gold Parent, Sheryl became Booster president and was a permanent fixture at all of the group’s fund-raising activities. She was particularly well-known for her commitment to organizing the annual band booth at the Fairfield County Fair where she continued to serve well after her son graduated. She was “Mom” to literally hundreds of LHS band students.

She was a member The First United Methodist Church, where she served as an active member of the choir program even conducting youth choirs for a time. She loved music so it was also no surprise to see her and Gary working as volunteers at the Lancaster Festival year after year.

Sheryl is survived by her devoted husband, Gary, son Dustin (Andrea) Johnson and brother, Keith (Marcia) Neel.

She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Betty and Lawrence E. Neel, Jr.

Described as leading with the kindness of a servant’s heart, Sheryl was a loyal friend to all who knew her and a rock for anyone who needed her. Her vibrant and positive outlook and influence are beyond measure. She was a true force of nature with a smile that would brighten the world.

A Memorial service will be held on Monday, March 14, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at The First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Alice Wolfe Officiating.
