Walter Frank Ziegler, born on July 12, 1935, in Olean, NY, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2025 at the Pickering House. He enjoyed a fulfilling and industrious life, marked by personal achievements and contributions to his community.
Walter graduated in 1959 from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY, earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering. This education paved the way for a successful career ending in Richmond, Virginia at Dominion Energy in 1997.
In retirement, Walter embraced a life of service through various volunteer activities. He actively participated in the Fairfield County District Library and the Fairfield County Heritage Association. He was a proud member of the Elks Lodge #570, where he served as a past Exalted Ruler. His commitment to community service continued as he took on the roll of Docent at The Sherman House.
Walter attended St. Bernadette Church and served as a communion distributor at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption.
An avid sports fan, Walter passionately supported the Reds, Ohio State University and Notre Dame. As a high school athlete, he performed at a high level playing guard and linebacker for the Olean Huskies, as well as 3rd base for the baseball team.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Peggy Ziegler; his sons David, Paul (Lauran), and Andrew (Cate);grandson Bryan; and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brother, Robert (Ruth) Ziegler; sister, Mary Ann (Donald) Layton; brother-in-law Donald Dunn and several nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walther Lyman and Anna Mae Sanford Ziegler and his sister Ellen Dunn.
Caring Cremation has take place through the Fank E. Smith Funeral Home and Crematory. A Memorial Mass at St. Bernadette Catholic Church will take place on Wed May 14th, 2025 with Fr. Dan Olvera officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Walter’s name to the Fairfield County District Library or the Fairmield County Heritage Association.
