He was a decorated World War II US Army veteran.  Private First Class Charles Edward Barnes, 510 Winding Street was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Heroic action against an enemy of the U.S. Pfc. Barnes, who was drafted February 26, 1944, received his training in Alabama and Mississippi before being sent overseas, in November 1944. During the eight months he has been overseas he has been with the U.S. 7th Army in France and Germany.  The citation accompanying the award states that Pfc. Barnes, who is with the 254th Infantry regiment, received the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in action in the vicinity of Jebsheim, France.  During the attack on the town, Pfc.
