It is with great sadness that the family of Donald “Don” Jewell announce his passing on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at the age of 102. Don has gone to be reunited with his wife, son, parents and many siblings.
Don was born January 11, 1919 in Greendale, Ohio to the late S.G and Hazel Jewell. He attended Greendale high school, graduating at the age of sixteen after skipping the 8th grade. He went on to join the Civilian Conservation Corps during the depression and then the United States Air Force, reaching the ranking of Master Sergeant. Don was a World War Two Veteran and a Bronze Star recipient. During this time, Don met his wife, June, and they went on to celebrate 64 years of marriage, having one son, the late Ed Jewell.
To many, Don was known as Grandpa. In his younger days, he could be seen across the street, fishing in the canal. He would then bring his daily catch home for his wife to fry up for dinner. He had a passion for wood working—many things you could see in his house were handmade by him. He took pride in all he did. He was involved in the Millersport Legion and loved giving back to his community. He had a knack for baking and loved to make his famous angel food cake. He was proud to be a part of a five-generation family.
Don is preceded in death by his loving wife, June, his son Ed, his parents S. G. and Hazel, along with many siblings. He will be remembered by his sister Bette Kitchen; grandchildren, Brian (Rhonda) Jewell, Denise (Duane) Holstein, and Troy (Aylin) Jewell; niece and nephew Mike and Karen Bergum; great-grandchildren Victoria (Jason) Hymiller, Cassie (Chris) Minder, Noah Jewell, Hanna Jewell, Troy Jewell and Kayra Jewell as well as four great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at 2 PM in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. Arrangements have taken place through the JOHNSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Millersport American Legion Auxiliary Post 637, 2557 Canal Drive, Millersport, Ohio 43046.
